Full description and objectives

The European robotics-for-sustainability community has already identified several important sustainability challenges, including circular industrial processes, repair, reuse and recycling, environmental monitoring, inspection, agriculture, resource efficiency, lifecycle assessment and the sustainability of robotic systems themselves.

This workshop takes the next step and asks how Robotics, AI and Data can jointly address these challenges and translate them into concrete ADR action lines.

The session follows a challenge-to-action format. Practical sustainability challenges will first be introduced from different application and technology perspectives. Participants will then discuss what robotics can contribute, which AI capabilities are needed, what data and validation structures are missing, and which concrete actions should be taken forward by the European ADR community.

A central outcome of the workshop will be a community white paper on sustainable AI, Data and Robotics. The workshop will therefore serve as a structured co-creation step for this paper, using the common logic:

Sustainability Challenge → ADR Capabilities → Current Gaps → Validation & Impact → ADR Action Lines

The objective is to create a bridge between the robotics sustainability community and the wider AI and data communities at ADRF and to identify common research priorities, deployment barriers, validation requirements and collaboration opportunities that can contribute to future ADRA and euRobotics roadmap activities.

The main outcome of the workshop will be structured input for a community white paper provisionally entitled:

“From Sustainability Challenges to ADR Action Lines: A European Research, Innovation and Deployment Agenda for Sustainable AI, Data and Robotics.”

The white paper is not intended to be an exhaustive roadmap, but rather a focused community input document connecting sustainability challenges with the complementary capabilities of Robotics, AI and Data.

Based on the workshop discussion, the paper is expected to capture:

• priority sustainability challenges for the European ADR community;
• complementary contributions of robotics, AI and data;
• recurring research, deployment, interoperability and validation gaps;
• approaches for measuring both technical performance and actual sustainability impact;
• a focused set of proposed ADR Action Lines;
• recommendations for ADRA, euRobotics, research programmes, industry and related stakeholders; and
• opportunities for future cross-domain collaboration.

The workshop results will be consolidated after the event into a challenge–capability–gap–action matrix. Recurring barriers and proposed actions will then be clustered into a limited number of concrete Action Lines.

A draft or summary will subsequently be circulated among the organisers and selected contributors for factual review before being used as input to ADRA/euRobotics discussions, roadmap activities and potential follow-up initiatives.
