Full description and objectives

Multimodal perception is maturing from laboratory technology into industrial systems, yet scaling remains difficult. This workshop brings together EU-funded projects addressing this frontier: COGNIMAN (manufacturing, presented by Lakshmy Aarvind, Deep Blue), iBot4CRMs (raw materials recovery, presented by Ines Baeta, EGF and Marcelo Petri, INESC TEC), MUPSIS, and AeroNex (infrastructure monitoring, presented by Diāna Gauče, Sadales tīkls and Carlos Bernad, NORCE). Crucially, the session addresses the Data strand by examining sensor data pipelines, annotation scarcity, and sim-to-real transfer gaps.

End-user organisations: EGF (waste sector) and Sadales tīkls (energy infrastructure), are active participants, presenting operational challenges and validating practical impact. Following brief project overviews, participants will engage in structured flipchart sessions. Moderator: Assia Belbachir, NORCE. Rapporteur: Antonio M. Ortiz, NORCE.

Predefined Discussion Questions:

1. What technical/organisational conditions must be met before a multimodal perception system can be deployed at production scale?

2. How can industry overcome data scarcity and high annotation costs for robust sim-to-real transfer?

3. What regulatory and certification pathways are required to validate safety without slowing down industrial deployment?

Objectives:

  • Share validated deployment results across manufacturing, waste, and energy sectors.

  • Map persistent barriers regarding data pipelines, integration, and certification.

  • Produce a strategic roadmap for dissemination via ADRA channels.

This workshop proposal is submitted as a standard interactive workshop, while strongly contributing to ADRF’s real-world deployment and value-creation objectives by demonstrating the convergence of AI, Data, and Robotics in real industrial deployments. COGNIMAN advances European manufacturing autonomy and Industry 5.0 through human-in-the-loop AI and multimodal sensors for cognitive manufacturing and zero-defect production. iBot4CRMs integrates AI perception and robotic manipulation to recover critical raw materials, strengthening European strategic sovereignty under the Critical Raw Materials Act. MUPSIS and AeroNex leverage advanced perception systems for power grid and infrastructure monitoring, directly enhancing grid infrastructure resilience and energy security across Europe.

Across the four projects, the workshop explicitly addresses AI, data, and robotics dimensions of technology uptake, including multimodal sensor data pipelines, annotation scarcity, and sim-to-real transfer gaps, deployment and integration, and operation and maintenance perspectives.

The interactive format is designed to extract transferable knowledge from these deployments and engage the broader ADR community in identifying scalable pathways, directly serving the Forum's mission of advancing industrial translation of ADR technologies.
