Rafael Monge Palma

Rafael Monge Palma, PhD, is a Researcher and Lecturer Assistant at the University of Seville (Spain), in the Department of Energy Engineering. He holds an Integrated Master's degree in Energy and Environmental Engineering from the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (2019) and obtained his PhD in Energy Engineering from the University of Seville in 2026, with the highest distinction (Cum Laude) and an International Doctorate mention. His thesis, Exploiting renovation strategies, passive cooling and control systems for pleasant and efficient residential buildings, was developed within the Termotecnia research group (TEP-143). His research addresses the energy renovation of existing residential buildings, thermal comfort, passive cooling and smart control strategies, with publications in Q1 journals such as Energy & Buildings and Applied Sciences. His work on a passive cooling double-skin roof was Highly Commended at the CIBSE Building Performance Awards 2025 (Product of the Year – Thermal Comfort). He has taken part in competitive R&D projects at European level, including CLIMACARE, COSMIC, BUILD-OSS, SATO, Med-EcoSuRe, as well as at national and regional level, several of which connect building and district renovation with nature-based solutions and climate resilience. Alongside his research, he has taught across 13 courses at the University of Seville and the University of Lisbon, and is a trainer at ADENE, the Portuguese Energy Agency.
