Alessandro Di Nuovo

Alessandro Di Nuovo is Director of the Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics and Professor of Machine Intelligence at Sheffield Hallam University. His research focuses on embodied AI, human–robot interaction, and the application of intelligent robotic systems in healthcare, rehabilitation, and assistive technologies. He has led numerous interdisciplinary projects exploring how robots can support vulnerable populations, including older adults and children with neurodevelopmental conditions, with an emphasis on adaptive, user-centred, and ethically grounded AI solutions. He currently serves as Scientific Coordinator of the Horizon Europe PRIMI (Performance in Robots Interaction via Mental Imagery) project, a €7.3 million international initiative bringing together leading academic and industrial partners across Europe to advance the next generation of autonomous, socially interactive robots. Under his scientific leadership, PRIMI is pioneering neuromorphic AI and humanoid robotics technologies to improve human-robot collaboration and support innovative rehabilitation solutions for stroke survivors. Professor Di Nuovo is also a key academic leader in the MSCA Doctoral Network SWEET (Social aWareness for sErvice roboTs), an international industrial doctoral programme that trains the next generation of researchers in socially aware and trustworthy service robotics through close collaboration between academia and industry.
