Description:

In today’s session, we will explore Europe’s potential to leverage AI, data, and robotics in laboratories and research environments, enabling us to compete on a global scale and even leapfrog major players such as the US. With science being a core pillar of AI’s advancement, a concerted effort in this domain could transform Europe’s leadership position in technological innovation.

However, connecting scientific domains like life sciences to AI and automation presents unique challenges. For example, while AI can be used to accelerate drug discovery, streamline manufacturing processes, and support decision-making through rule-based vision systems, significant hurdles remain, especially in integrating robotic automation with AI models. Likewise, AI offers transformative potential for renewable energy systems and climate science, but the technical and ethical challenges are profound.

To overcome these challenges, it is essential to foster collaborative ecosystems of researchers, universities, and research and technology organizations (RTOs), working alongside industry. By forming AI "factories" and leveraging Europe’s rich diversity in scientific expertise and infrastructures, we can enhance efficiency in drug delivery, manufacturing, and research and development (R&D).

Today’s forum will bring together distinguished panelists who are pioneers in their fields, offering technical insights and sharing their experiences on how AI, data, and robotics are driving breakthroughs. The discussions will cover the following key areas:

  • The transformative role of AI, big data, and robotics across different scientific disciplines.

  • How AI is accelerating discoveries in fields like biology, chemistry, and energy.

  • The importance of data analytics in handling and analyzing large datasets to uncover new scientific insights.

  • Recent innovations in robotics, particularly in laboratory automation and field research, and how these advancements are reshaping scientific practices.

  • The crucial role of universities, RTOs, and research infrastructures in supporting AI development, through the creation of Testing and Experimentation Facilities (TEFs), which can validate new technologies and enhance AI’s readiness for scientific applications.

We encourage active engagement with our panelists, detailed discussions, and the sharing of technical perspectives. This is an opportunity to explore how AI, data, and robotics can propel Europe forward in scientific research and innovation, while addressing the ethical, regulatory, and technical challenges that come with these advancements.
