Short description: How does investing in Data Science Open Source software development contribute to enhacing European technological sovereignty?
Date: 05.11.2024 | 11.15 - 11.45
Location: Philips Hall
Description:
In this workshop, we will discuss the Open Source model and how it fosters collective innovation by bringing together contributions from researchers, engineers, and developers across diverse backgrounds, unlocking creative potential that far exceeds what any single organization could achieve alone.
We’ll explore how Open Source offers flexibility in governance and usage, allowing users to adapt and redefine functionalities to meet specific needs. Transparency is also crucial for building trust in AI technologies, particularly in areas where automated decisions can have significant impacts. By ensuring that systems are open and understandable, we can mitigate concerns and enhance accountability.
We’ll also examine the relationship between Open Source and sovereignty: moving away from dependence on proprietary tools enables organizations to regain strategic autonomy, and investing in Open Source can lead to greater control over tools by enabling participation in their governance.
Finally, we'll open the floor for discussions about initiatives that support this vision, starting with P16/Probabl, a pioneering public / private effort led by Inria for the development and maintenance of Open Source data science software and its distribution. Participants will also be welcome to share their ideas and similar initiatives they’re familiar with.
